Session O445 - JES2: Questions and Answers

SHARE 71
August 15-19, 1988

This session is kind of a free-for-all wherein you can ask technical questions of the experts. I asked a couple of questions for which I have been unable to get authoritative answers in Orlando.

  1. In $SCANTAB, PRESCAN routines are obligated to fill in SCWACBAD if it is zero. If you specify a primitive control block via CB= and control block indirection via CBIND=, the value of SCWACBAD will be the primitive control block if the CBIND operation returns zero. Is this a bug?
  2. Does $SCANTAB support nested vector definitions?
The answer to question 1 was "Beats us". The answer to the second question was "We think it supports nesting, but we'll go back and ask the father of $SCAN. They had the presence of mind not to divulge Father Scan's real name - I'd love to wring that man's neck.

Somebody wanted to know how to tell in exit #6 if a PROC came from a PROCLIB or was an instream PROC. IBM told him to look for a usermod on the SHARE tape that was known to do this!

During the course of the session, it became apparent that the JES-328x product supports PDIR. This implies that it will be difficult for me to get IBM to address a problem I've been having with remote printer support, wherein we have to manually enter $S commands for remote laser printers.
