Session O354 - MVSE: Multiple Data Center Support

SHARE 71
August 15-19, 1988

Two speakers from large installations talked about how they distributed IBM maintenance to their subordinate data centers. It was fun seeing how the other half lives...

Bill Bischoff from Nynex applies current maintenance on his own system every three months and distributes a new SYSRES and DLIB pair to a half dozen centers. Jim Gallagher (Amoco) tailors systems for each of his subordinate centers. Some of those centers are equipped to do SMP, and some of them aren't.

Amoco is kind of weird insofar as they've taught SMP to do maintenance for PL/I application programs (as delivered from IBM, SMP only knows about assembler language programs). Much of their change management procedures revolve about the use of SMP.

(The SHARE installation code for Amoco is "IN". I wondered about this; it turns out that it dates WAY back to when Amoco was "Standard Oil of Indiana".)
