I finally got to meet Jack Schudel at this session. I communicated with him semi-regularly over the FIRN network back when I worked for the Orange County School Board, but never got to meet with him face to face until Chicago.
A lady got up to talk about two programs that support 3287 printers in JES2 systems. One of the programs ran in a separate address space, and was independent of JES2, but you paid for it in CPU time (5% of a 3081) and you couldn't take checkpoints. The other program modifies JES2 code, but used minimal resources and allowed checkpoints and most JES2 commands. Both programs tended to delete printouts if you had VTAM line errors. She made Dave Phillips' RJE3270 sound pretty good, seeing as how RJE3270 is fast, efficient, provides console support, and is fully independent of your JES.
A systems programmer that presented his EXIT15 got lambasted by an IBM level-two support guy for not acquiring fixed storage before doing PRPUT.
Another systems type described changes he had to code in his exits in order to convert from 1.3.4 to the XA level (2.1.5). Among his suggestions, he said to convert all of your BAL and BALR instructions to BAS and BASR. There was some general agreement in my corner of the ballroom that the man was running about a quart low but we decided to keep it to ourselves.
