The Joy of Ricing
I've got my home machine configured to run emerge sync every
Saturday morning. I get up late on Saturdays, putz around the
house for awhile, get some coffee and look to see what the Gentoo
boys have cooked up over the past week.
Today I got a double whammy early Christmas extravaganza. It seems that a couple of days ago that OpenOffice 2.0 went stable. Friends, I've been looking forward to this release for awhile, but not looking forward to the recompilation. Last time I did it, it took about a day and a half on this machine (a dog slow 350MHz P-II).
But this pales in comparison to the other big surprise: the release gods have finally blessed the GCC 3.4.4 compiler. Installing this bad boy pretty much means that you recompile everything you have.
So... that's what I'm doing. I mean, what the hell. I leave the computer on 24/7 anyway so I might as well run emerge in background.
I started this insanity about 3:00 this afternoon. We'll see how long
it takes to finish emerge system (98 components), and then we'll
move on to emerge world -- where the big stuff lives. Yippee Skippy.
